00:00:17
Hey everybody, Rick Pedersen here, Goes To 11 Media today we’re starting a new segment this one’s gonna get you guys all jazzed up it’s all caffeine oriented and today I’m joined with a very special co-host my wife Paula
00:00:30
hi everybody now we called this segment Grounds For Divorce and a little tongue in cheek there I mean hopefully you guys are all doing
00:00:38
well through the whole pandemic because we were very fortunate to speak with the owners at Spent Grounds Coffee in South Surrey British Columbia and they give us a couple different coffees to try out for us now Paul you’re sort of the
00:00:51
resident coffee expert I Ida faulted in my past behavior going to place as I call six bucks and six bucks was six bucks every time I got a coffee and it was always sort of consistent but it was never you call
00:01:06
gourmet coffee by any means in my opinion I do enjoy the the homemade barista coffees and also going into like the little smaller coffee shops guys they produce some amazing stuff thank you and you do as well now the
00:01:21
thing is is that you you’re the first one to say that you don’t do the the fancy foam coffee art no I’m okay with that I’m okay with it it’s a the coffee
00:01:33
tastes great and that’s what really matters so explain to us some things that you’ve learned over the years about coffee that’s that you look for that you like well I pretty much like a coffee that tastes good and everyone has their
00:01:50
own preferences whether they like something that’s a bit bitter has a bit more sweetness in it or citrusy fruity or things like chocolate creme caramel flavors I pretty much I’m open to trying all sorts of coffee
00:02:12
and I will enjoy new coffee I find that the most important thing fresh beans so the wonderful thing about spent grounds one of the wonderful things is that on the bottom they actually have a roasted on date whereas many other mainstream
00:02:36
big brand coffees do not they just have an expiration date so with this you can take a look this one says May 4th freakin fresh I can’t wait to try this yeah and then the other thing too is obviously is don’t
00:02:50
grind your stuff up in advance and leave it to sit there because you lose a lot of the flavors the oils or whatever right so true alright so what are we gonna start with first I guess we’re gonna start with
00:03:01
from this guy here this is spring crowns and this is not gonna take my glasses off because I can’t see up close here this is their the medium roast and it is a chocolate green apple plum so let’s give that a try it seems mmm that is
00:03:22
good it’s not harsh by any means like it definitely can taste the the green apple mmm which are just a little bit hint of chocolate there now the cool thing guys to keep in mind this stuff here is you know essentially what’s happening in the
00:03:42
coffee industry is what happened to beer you know we’re getting into all these small Roasters independent Roasters creates really funky stuff which we’re looking to bring them to you guys to see and get some reviews on it’s it’s kind
00:03:54
of like what the craft brewery has done don’t be Ron the Ted and I think that these guys are starting to do the same thing in coffee and I think it’s awesome and you’re doing it I like this one because it is definitely not it doesn’t
00:04:07
have that you know harsh mister you’re bitter where your oh yeah it’s like straight black coffee typically isn’t something that I would drink but this one actually is a very mellow flavor to it it’s it’s rose yeah
00:04:26
definitely there’s a stronger roast flavor to it yeah right it’s not harsh by any means but it’s definitely you can definitely taste how the the roasting not just go from that sort of middle ground and they kick it
00:04:40
up where you get more of it and what it actually reminds me of is is speaking of beers is how when they do the different beers and they roast the the malts that’s cuter right and then with the darker their roast you get some crazy
00:04:52
stuff happens with beer you’ll get beers it’ll taste like chocolate and all these different notes come out of it and that’s all in the roasting of the most so you can with these beatings really cool like it mm-hmm
00:05:03
so do you taste a bit of that creme caramel in it it’s so low I notice it actually at the the front of my tongue into the middle of my tongue it’s a song note so it’s definitely not something where it jumps oh can you go OK bang
00:05:20
it’s caramel but I definitely I get the the more for me is the essence of the roasting really comes up nicely it’s very good how about you yeah I can taste a bit more sweetness in
00:05:38
this one yes and it does have that deeper I’m gonna go back to the other one just to see mm-hmm it’s interesting because they’re dynamically different like they’re just there is no pressure like this is this one this is that one
00:06:00
but they’re both equally flavorful mm-hmm and again even though we’ve gone to a dark roast with this one here I’m not noticing it as harsh there’s some way it’s not yes it’s quite smooth actually
00:06:13
I’m quite impressed and that’s that’s unusual because for me often times they look like a straight black coffee you don’t have it and it’s just it’s got that note that it hits you in your stomach
00:06:22
races too much but that’s really nice it’s very well balanced so and it really depends on the quality of the bean how does an roasted and how fresh it is I can’t wait for this room I’m going in all right I’m
00:06:38
gonna try this one again oh wow that is good that’s right that’s that’s a good lighting now one of the things you know it’s a different so mm-hmm this is fruitier I think it’s got that
00:06:54
more of a green apple it has this is a silly way to explain it has what I call a rounded flavor to it mm-hmm like these you can taste the bit of the bitterness and almost like the sour apple you get a whole bunch of notes
00:07:12
come in yeah that’s right it’s it’s rounded but where the darker roasts is a it sort of does this more to you mm-hmm but it’s not got a harshness to it it’s a very difference when I find it it has more dimension and this one is pretty
00:07:26
I’m gonna tell you this lattes killer it’s very good yeah that’s good I don’t like it here’s the thing I know I take this one here try to if someone that I wanted to add for you guys that just personal
00:07:49
tastes and that typically like I’m lactose intolerant so for me having just regular dairy is not really a great option so we go and we use a brand called natural and it’s a lactose reduced or whatever and but the
00:08:04
flavor is still there like you’re having regular dairy which is awesome I love that I typically would default to either a soy or coconut milk now Paulo has a very particular mindset of a coconut milk in tea lattes I love it it doesn’t
00:08:23
bother me at all I don’t notice it’s like some people who said like it’s like you’re drinking suntan lotion but I don’t find that I barely taste the coconut in there when I’m having my but I do you know it’s very strong to me
00:08:36
but what I can’t handle what’s the one I can’t handle hmm could it be almond milk no can’t stand I like almond milk almond milks great and so many things you can use it for but actually I have made you iced coffee with almond because it
00:08:52
tastes yes yeah but there’s a second you heat that stuff up it just goes absolutely like bitter scorched flavor to me I don’t like it at all can hell yeah it really changes the flavor of pretty much a woman milk itself and me
00:09:10
it ruins a coffee yeah so so basically my two choices you know at home here typically would be either the natural or the lactose are you lactose free or the the soy and the lactose free really Frost’s up really nicely I’m quite
00:09:28
amazed mhm very very creamy very smooth a very good finish to it it doesn’t miss not there is absolutely zero bitters coming out of that let’s go try this one here I already put you over there
00:09:54
mm-hmm it’s very nice different again mm-hmm now the thing that I could see instantly obviously is the the darker the cream on the top with the foam so you can see it’s obviously gonna be a little bit darker roast again just a
00:10:13
really nice finish to it right that’s really nice well and I did a double shot for each one okay so those double shots okay I thought when we were filming it it looked like there was a lot of girls going in there yeah yeah sometimes hard
00:10:35
to not make a mess when I use the espresso machine but the espresso machine is pretty awesome like I’ve really gotten used to it I’ve had to fiddle a little bit adjusting the grind amount the grind coarseness and all
00:10:54
those can affect how the espresso gets brewed and the flavor no just as a quick tip what do you have it set up for the grind what’s that on my machine it’s a Tabo didn’t eat me okay and sometimes between brands I have to
00:11:12
adjust it a little bit yeah then obviously the definer you’re going you’re probably gonna get a little bit more flavor I’m going to I’m thinking um it also depends how long the poor takes there’s all the science behind it I’m
00:11:28
not gonna worry myself with the science I did have to play around multiple times trying different settings and stuff because it will affect the flavor of the coffee but it’s like everything I really yeah and for some people the drip coffee
00:11:47
it’s the easiest fastest easier to clean and and everything but the espressos they just have a richness to them that I really enjoy I will do Americanos and have them straight or I will add some sort of a milk
00:12:08
but yeah the the espressos definitely take more time some people who will call it it’s a hobby coffee but when you have a machine like the one we have it’s so once you figure it out it is so easy and so enjoyable so like when I wake up in
00:12:26
the morning it’s one of the first things I go and do and it is it’s there’s something about it that is just so nice now when you make it at home it’s it’s I have to say it’s even nicer when you go hey can you make me a lot of tank he’s
00:12:41
the one that bought the machine all excited when he first had it and you know after a few weeks you have barely touched that thing then we got that how many years ago my mama didn’t raise a stupid children but you know the other
00:13:00
notes is that it’s a Bravo machine sometimes they went by the name sage is well I think in Australia or whatever nope okay okay so I saw you makes it the price you know a little bit more expensive however if you don’t want to
00:13:14
go through all the process of learning how to dial it in and grind it and tamp it and then do all the before and whatever they’re one machine what was it called again I’ll put it in the description here give me a minute look
00:13:29
it up for you but it was a really really cool and it was touchscreen and all kinds of stuff on it so thank you for tuning in today this is the first segment of mini to come for our grounds for divorce segment hey the whole idea
00:13:46
behind this of the the name obviously was a little tongue-in-cheek for what we’ve all been going through but it’s also Paul as you say it’s it’s the separation and saying it again it’s it’s about the difference between the big
00:14:00
branded companies that mass-produced their coffee versus the coffee’s small Coffee Roasters right yeah like you were talking about breweries it’s small they smaller is divorcing the you know from the
00:14:23
mainstream getting into the we’re separating them separately exactly so anyways guys we will be back next week with another segment that’s going to be featuring Kicking Horse Coffee from up in Invermere British Columbia in this
00:14:36
correct and we are looking forward bringing that episode and in the meantime please don’t forget to hit the like button click the little subscribe button and the reminder bell so you don’t miss any future segments of all
